Afrasianet - U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing for a possible political and legal confrontation that could affect him and his family if the Democratic Party succeeds in wresting control of Congress during November's midterm elections, according to press reports.

Trump is working to allocate millions of dollars to cover the legal defense expenses of him and members of his family, amid fears that Democrats, if they regain the parliamentary majority, will open extensive investigations into the family's business interests and suspicions of financial exploitation of presidential influence.

The president is outraged by the prospect of his family members being subjected to parliamentary scrutiny, but he is not surprised by the willingness of his political opponents to reopen old files and raise new questions about the overlap between power and vested interests.

From the White House to Family Interests

The political threats that the report talks about do not stop at Trump personally, but extend to his closest family circle, foremost among them his wife Melania and his youngest son Barron, as well as his other children and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The Independent quoted Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia as saying that any thorough investigation should address the activities of the president's sons and family members, as well as a number of his advisers and administration officials.

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin said questions about the family's financial interests warrant expanded parliamentary oversight.

The remarks are particularly important given the powers that congressional committees have to request documents, hold hearings and subpoena witnesses, tools that could allow Democrats, if they control the committees involved, to exert new political and legal pressure on the administration.

Baron Trump and Cryptocurrencies

Baron Trump, the president's youngest son, is among the figures that may be questioned by lawmakers over his association with the World Liberty Financial cryptocurrency project, in which other members of the Trump family, including Eric and Donald Trump Jr., have participated.

This file raises questions about the nature of the family's business interests in a fast-growing financial sector, and the extent to which they are likely to conflict with regulatory decisions and government policies related to digital assets.

The report also cited previous calls to question Barron about his alleged ties to influencer Andrew Tate, allegations that do not in themselves imply that any wrongdoing has been proven.

Melania Trump and the Amazon deal

Melania Trump is also facing questions about a deal to produce a documentary about her with Amazon, which the report said was worth $40 million.

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Hank Johnson have asked for clarification on the deal and whether its trade terms raise concerns about trying to influence or get closer to the administration.

The value of the deal is not in itself evidence of wrongdoing, but its critics are demanding clarification of the terms of the contract and the nature of the financial consideration, especially in light of Melania's official position as first lady.

Kushner and Donald Jr. Other Files Under Focus

According to the report, potential investigations could extend to the investments of Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law and former adviser, and his international business ties.

He also pointed to questions about the wedding of Donald Trump Jr., who reportedly had funding from a Russian billionaire, and business activities linked to President Kai Trump's granddaughter.

As the report shows, these files remain potential subjects of parliamentary scrutiny, rather than judicial rulings or evidence of wrongdoing.

White House rejects accusations

The White House has dismissed the accusations against the president and his family, with spokeswoman Lauren Pace describing the investigations that Democrats are threatening as political campaigns based on false allegations.

She stressed that Trump is working to serve the interests of Americans, considering that his opponents seek to obstruct his political agenda instead of focusing on issues that matter to citizens.

The controversy evokes a long history of confrontations between Trump and Congress, as the House of Representatives has previously charged him twice under impeachment proceedings during his first term: the first over the Ukraine affair, and the second after the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions.

$400 million... Between the Electoral Battle and the Legal Defense

According to the report, Trump is preparing to keep millions of dollars out of the nearly $400 million raised by his backing political action committee, MAGA Inc., to be used when needed to cover the legal defense expenses of his family members.

Republicans had hoped to channel more of that money to campaigns, at a time when competition for control of the House and Senate is intense. The report does not imply that the money has already been allocated or spent on legal defense, but rather speaks of a possible readiness for such a scenario.

November Elections... A Battle for Power and Oversight

These developments come ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, which will determine the balance of power in Congress during the second half of Trump's term.

The Independent pointed to polls giving Democrats a nine-point lead over Republicans, amid the debate over the administration's economic performance and the fallout from the war on Iran. However, this progress does not necessarily mean that control of either house of Congress is decided, as the results depend on the electoral contests in different districts and states.

If Democrats win a majority in either chamber, they could expand parliamentary investigations, including subpoenas of documents, subpoenas witnesses and scrutiny of business deals linked to the president's family.

In a separate report published in September, the Washington Post revealed that Democratic lawmakers are already envisioning a broad investigation into Trump's business interests and his administration's policies if their party regains control of the House of Representatives.

The possibility of Trump being impeached for a third time remains tied to congressional balances and any subsequent impeachments. The House of Representatives can impeach impeachment proceedings by a simple majority, but convicting and impeaching the president requires the approval of two-thirds of the senators present.

The November election could shift from a contest for a legislative majority to a broader showdown over oversight of the executive branch and the financial interests of the presidential family, as Trump prepares politically and financially for the prospect of a new phase of conflict with his opponents.
