The  Balfour Declaration... 109 years and the right does not expire with time.!

A fractured window separates a historical decision from the living memory of a people, while the key, olive branch and old document preserve the story of a homeland and a right that time cannot erase (Afrasia).

Afrasianet - Every year, November 2 commemorates the Balfour Declaration, a promise that has remained in the Palestinian memory as a title of injustice and a witness to the danger of the great powers deciding the fate of peoples away from their will.

On its 100th anniversary, the question arises: How can a short message leave such a profound impact on the life of a nation and successive generations?

On November 2, 1917, British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour sent a letter to Lord Rothschild, declaring his government's support for the establishment of a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine, and pledging to make efforts to facilitate its realization.

A letter issued by a foreign government, dealing with the future of a land inhabited by a people with its own history, cities, villages, lives, and aspirations.

The promise included a requirement that the civil and religious rights of the non-Jewish population of Palestine would not be affected, but it did not explicitly recognize their political and national rights.

In a Palestinian reading of the text, here lies one of the deepest injustices: that the people of the country are remembered as religious groups, while shaping the future of their homeland without recognizing their right to self-determination.

The promise was not a dead letter; its content was included in the British Mandate for Palestine and became part of the framework that governed the country. Transformations and conflicts continued until the Nakba of 1948, when more than half of the Palestinian Arab population fled or was expelled from their homes.

Thus, the document was linked in the Palestinian consciousness to a historical course that ended with the loss of homes and land, the disintegration of families, and the life of refugees.

The key carries the memory of home, while the story remains alive in its smallest details, no matter how long the absence lasts (Afrasia).

Behind these facts are faces, names and stories; a mother kept the key to her house, a father whose children inherited the name of his village, and a grandmother who kept describing the way to her house as if she had left it yesterday.

There is a homeland that has remained present in the memory, in the song, the picture and the document, and in the small details that people carried with them when they could not carry their homes.

Commemorating the Balfour Declaration is also a responsibility to know and document. It is our duty to tell our children exactly what happened, to preserve the testimonies of adults, and to link adherence to rights with awareness, action, and the protection of human dignity.

Memory needs someone to preserve it, and truth needs a voice that knows how to defend it with argument and steadfastness.

We will not forget... We will keep writing and telling.! (Afrasia).

From the perspective of historical and moral responsibility, Britain remains required to confront its role in this tragedy and to translate this into positions that support Palestinian rights and justice. A just peace requires recognition of the suffering of peoples, the preservation of their dignity and the guarantee of their right to freedom, security and self-determination.

After 109 years, the memory of Balfour remains a wound in the Palestinian conscience, and it remains to be confronted with memory, knowledge and determination to live. A message may change the course of history, but it cannot erase a people from its history, or rob it of its right to a dignified future.

We will not forget, and we will continue to write and narrate, because the land has a story, and its people have a right that does not fall under obsolescence.!

Seekers of Justice, Freedom, and Human Rights.!
