Afrasianet - The New York Times revealed that the evacuation of Britain's Fairford base from bombers took place exceptionally quickly following information about an Iranian plot targeting it, and the planes took off before they were fully ready.
The US Air Force has confirmed the withdrawal of all its bombers from RAF Base in Fairford. The Pentagon explained in the statement that all B-1 bombers deployed at the base have returned to their original bases back home.
The newspaper revealed that the degree of urgency was great, as some of the bombers and their crews took off for the United States while the aerial refueling planes called in to help them were still in the process of being prepared.
The surprise "escape" came in response to security concerns and new intelligence about the suspected Iranian-backed terrorist plot that targeted the base used by U.S. forces.
A U.S. War Department official confirmed to The Telegraph that operational security prevented confirmation of asset movements in real time, but stressed the redeployment of all bombers to America. U.S. officials also told the Wall Street Journal that the decision was a direct response to these threats.
British counter-terrorism police have launched an investigation into possible Iranian involvement in the plot. Five British nationals and a dual British and Iranian national were arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives charges.
Police said they found a quantity of gasoline in three trucks linked to the suspects, but no explosives were found. All those arrested were later released on bail.
