California Governor Gavin Newsom calls US President Donald Trump "dangerous and mentally ill" after his controversial remarks on Iran.
Afrasianet - California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called U.S. President Donald Trump "dangerous and mentally ill" after his controversial remarks on Iran, according to the New York Times.
Speaking at a Republican Party rally in Nebraska, Trump sought to justify the war on Iran as necessary to "keep the world safe" and then hinted at the possibility of strikes on the United States, including Democratic-led cities in California.
"They can destroy an entire city," he said. "Let's destroy Los Angeles. Let's destroy San Diego."
His remarks were met with outrage from officials in California, including Newsom, who wrote on social media: "After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying that our foreign enemies must 'eliminate' Los Angeles and San Diego."
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also wrote that his city was not "collateral damage" and not "expendable."
"Keep our city away from your reckless talk about war," he added.
In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass said the president's remarks were "dangerous" and could "jeopardize the safety of the city."
"The president's role is to protect the country, not to effectively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives," she said in a statement on social media.
