Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, the preacher of Al-Aqsa Mosque, also rejected the charge of incitement leveled against him by the occupation judiciary, and confirmed that he will continue to pray for the martyrs, noting that the charges included his obituary for the martyr Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas, who was assassinated by Israel in Tehran in July 2024.

In parallel, Fatah, the largest faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) that leads the Palestinian Authority, ended its eighth congress, which resulted in extensive changes in the Central Committee, with the prisoner Marwan Barghouti leading the results, followed by Maj. In this context, the Spanish capital Madrid and several cities witnessed mass marches to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba. This widespread wave of demonstrations and events in support of Palestine was manifested in a widespread popular and political movement that started from Barcelona, Valencia and reached Madrid.

This movement has been accompanied by an unprecedented popular and official momentum in the country, calling for practical and immediate steps to stop the genocide.

The march in the Spanish capital followed demonstrations in dozens of cities and coincided with prominent symbolic and media positions, according to Al Jazeera.

The past few days have witnessed the raising of the Palestinian flag by the star of the Barcelona team, Lamine Jamal, in parallel with the decision of the Spanish Television Corporation to boycott the "Eurovision" festival.

These decisions and positions were directly supported by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who stood by the Barcelona star and all defenders of the Palestinian cause.

Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz criticized Amin Gamal after waving the Palestinian flag during his team's league title celebrations, accusing him of inciting against Israel and promoting hatred.

Lamin Jamal, 18, raised the Palestinian flag while inside the open-top bus that toured Barcelona with his teammates, before posting footage of the celebration, including a photo of him waving the flag, on his  Instagram account, which has more than 42 million followers.

Popular demands

In the context of the demand for effective measures on the ground, human rights activist Elena Malino stressed the need to adopt concrete steps to support the Palestinian people and have a real impact on the lives of people inside the country.

Malino pointed out that there is still no comprehensive boycott of arms sales, and there is no complete ban on various activities, stressing that Israel should be excluded from all sporting events.

These positions were accompanied by slogans raised by the demonstrators at the march to pressure the Spanish government to take firm decisions, foremost of which is to cut diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv once and for all, and to prosecute Spanish companies accused of dealing with the occupation and contributing to the genocide.

In this context, one of the participants in the demonstration explained that it is the political relations and commitments that bind governments to Israel that prevent them from taking tougher positions, considering that the people are not bound by those commitments.

She called for the masses to continue to press hard and by all possible means, including the imposition of boycotts and real economic sanctions that would force Israel to end this genocide.

The European Union has also been heavily criticized, with participants in the march accusing it of blocking some vital proposals, specifically those submitted by Spain with the aim of suspending the trade partnership agreement between EU countries and Israel.

The 78th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba falls this year as Palestinians live through a devastating war in the Gaza Strip and an unprecedented escalation of settlement and displacement in the occupied West Bank, in a scene reminiscent of the Nakba chapters that began in 1948 and continue to repeat itself in different forms.
