Afrasianet - The Israeli authorities have detained the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General for Safety and Security Gilles Michaux in connection with his previous visit to the Gaza Strip.
According to Israeli media, the UN official was arrested during the search procedures at Ben Gurion Airport, where security forces confiscated his passport and transferred him to a special waiting area, before he was interrogated about an official visit he made to the Gaza Strip last August, which was then done in advance coordination with the occupation authorities.
Michaux called the treatment of a senior UN official unprecedented, stressing that he had not faced similar behavior in any other country he had visited.
Against the backdrop of the incident, the UN official decided to cancel all his scheduled official meetings inside Israel, in a move that reflects the extent of dissatisfaction with the Israeli action, which comes in the context of escalating international criticism of Israel's behavior towards international institutions operating in Palestine, especially after the increasing pressures related to the war of extermination on Gaza.
