On the brink of open conflict: Hungary cuts off gas supplies to Ukraine

On the energy war between Budapest and Kiev, Valentin Adoniev writes in Komsomolskaya Pravda:

Afrasianet - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ordered the halt of natural gas supplies to Ukraine. The gas was transported via a pipeline built during the Soviet era, flowing from the Soviet Union to Eastern Europe.

Now, Budapest, which still buys Russian gas via the Turkish Stream pipeline, is pumping part of it, according to existing agreements, through the old Soviet pipeline to Ukraine in the opposite direction. But the Hungarians have run out of patience and have closed the gas valve, leaving Ukraine without these The vital commodity, after Kyiv, under a fabricated pretext, cut off supplies of strategically important oil from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline earlier this year.

Alexander Kamkin, a researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Komsomolskaya Pravda about the possible repercussions of this move:

"It is clear that Zelensky, despite his hatred of Orbán, did not cut off oil supplies to Hungary on his own initiative.

This attempt, in coordination with the EU leadership, is being made to influence Hungarian society ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12.

Brussels and Kiev desperately hope that Hungary's economy, which is being depleted in this way, will slide into crisis, and that angry voters will vote against the current prime minister's ruling party, which topples him from power.

"This radical response from Budapest to the actions of its Ukrainian neighbor is an indication that relations between them are heading towards an open military-political conflict."
