U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at CBS News anchor Nora O'Donnell during an interview on Sunday for quoting a statement attributed to the suspect in the shooting near the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
This came less than 24 hours after a shooting while US President Donald Trump was attending a White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Washington on Saturday evening local time.
During the interview with "60 Minutes," O'Donnell read an excerpt from the statement of Cole Allen, the suspect in the shooting: "I will no longer allow a child molester, rapist and traitor to stain my hands with his crimes," prompting an angry reaction from Trump.
Trump: I'm not a rapist or a child molester
Addressing the anchor, Trump said, "I knew you were going to do it ... You guys are terrible people," adding, "I'm not a rapist ... I'm not a child molester."
Trump ignored the anchor's question about whether the statement was aimed at him personally, stressing that he was "not a child molester," and called the content of the statement "nonsense from a sick person."
As for the Jeffrey Epstein case, Trump expressed dismay at what he saw as a hint to link him to the case, although he did not explicitly name him, stressing that he was "completely innocent" of any connection.
At the beginning of the interview, Trump expressed sympathy for the journalists who attended the dinner, before returning to criticize the media, saying it was "left-leaning" and opposed to his policies.
He concluded his attack on the presenter by saying: "You should be ashamed of yourself for reading this... You are a disgrace."
