Marwan Barghouti and the Occupation: Rubber Bullets or Fascist Savage?

Afrasianet - Lawyer Fadwa Barghouti, wife of Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, who has been detained in Israeli prisons since 2002, said that one of the jailers fired a rubber bullet into his leg last week, causing him "bleeding and painful injury, in a new episode of ongoing attacks on him."

Feldman took the initiative to address the Israeli Prison Service about the attack, which he learned of from During his recent visit, his client received a reply stating that Barghouti's injury was "unfounded."

As is well known, Barghouti is serving five life sentences, after being convicted by the occupation courts for leading resistance activities during the Second Palestinian Intifada, which included the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem in late September 2000.

This new incident is part of a series of harassment, abuses and various forms of abuse that Barghouti has been subjected to since his arrest.

The attacks were not limited to the jailers and members of the occupation police alone, but the extremist Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir personally participated in them, who stormed Barghouti's cell and made barbaric verbal threats, intended to publicly report the scenes in the media.

A few weeks later, Barghouti was severely beaten by the jailers while being transferred from Remo Prison to Megiddo Prison, which left him unconscious and resulted in fractures in four ribs and head wounds.

The maximum of the fascist brutality against Barghouti stems first from a series of hidden hatreds that begin with his leadership in the resistance, and his wide popularity among the Palestinian people, and do not end with his Arab and international status as a symbol of the culture of steadfastness, survival and confronting the worst occupation in history.

Not absent from these equations of hatred is that the occupation is aware of Barghouti's position at internal organizational and factional levels, which goes beyond the issues of agreement or disagreement between Fatah and Hamas, and continues to establish realistic and tangible commonalities for Palestinian national unity with urgent necessities.

Barbarism is the destruction of the Palestinian national will, the annihilation of the traditions of struggle and the suppression of the spirit of the Intifada among the daughters and sons of the Palestinian people of all walks of life, affiliations and beliefs.

Here, politics enters into the pillars of the entire approach, whether at the theoretical or practical levels, so that the abuse of Barghouti becomes the first destination of the absence of the idea of a Palestinian state, and from there to the dismantling of the Palestinian identity itself.

This strategy has failed and ended up in the dustbin of history, as it is not with rubber bullets or with fascist brutality that the will of the peoples is broken or their lands, rights and entities are usurped.
