Trump celebrates the ouster of Senator Bill Cassidy on social media
Afrasianet - In his second term, he carried his hatred and desire to take revenge on his opponents, and then they would tell you about democracy.
US President Donald Trump succeeded in unseating Senator Bill Cassidy in the Republican primary in Louisiana, a sign that the president's influence within his party remains strong, despite an unpopular war and high fuel prices.
Cassidy was one of seven Republican senators who voted in 2021 to convict Trump of inciting the insurrection on Jan. 6 that year over the storming of the Capitol.
Trump is suffering from declining popularity in the Republican Party, due to economic frustration and divisions over the war on Iran, but he still has a strong influence on conservative voters.
Cassidy finished last in a three-way race against Rep. Julia Little, who has Trump's backing, and State Treasurer John Fleming.
"His disloyalty to the man who got him to office is now part of the narrative circulating about him, and it's good to see that his political career is over," Trump said of Cassidy, in a social media post.
Trump also wrote, "This is your reward for voting to impeach an innocent man."
With 92.3 percent of the votes counted, Littlelow received 44.8 percent of the vote, while Fleming received 28.3 percent, and Cassidy dropped to third place with 24.7 percent of the vote.
Littleo and Fleming are scheduled to run for re-election on June 27.
The winner of this contest is virtually guaranteed victory in November's elections in this strongly Republican state.
Revenge against opponents
Unlike some other senators who refused to run again after opposing Trump, Cassidy pushed hard for re-election, spending nearly twice as much as his opponents had spent.
Several U.S. states are currently holding primaries as Trump campaigns to retaliate against politicians who opposed him. On May 5, he helped unseat five of the seven Indiana senators who rejected his redistricting plan.
On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky will face Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallerin in another Republican primary.
Massey angered Trump by opposing his key tax bill because of concerns about the public debt, calling for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and opposing his decision to wage war on Iran.
