Houthi strikes push Eilat port to declare bankruptcy

Afrasianet - The Israeli port of Eilat has declared bankruptcy due to an 85% drop in activity due to Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea. The report of the website specialized in transport and shipping affairs indicated that the economic impact of the Houthi strikes in Yemen on shipping ships in the waters of the Red Sea, led to a decrease in volumes by 85%, prompting the port to request financial assistance from the Israeli government.

"Despite the brief rise in Q4 of 2022, the port has not seen any activity or revenue for 8 months, CEO Gideon Gulbert told the Knesset Economic Affairs Committee on July 7."

The port city of Eilat deals mainly with bulk cargo, potash and car imports, much smaller than the Mediterranean ports of Ashdod and Haifa, but Houthi attacks have significantly affected Israeli trade.

It is noteworthy that "in solidarity with Gaza", which has been suffering for more than a year under Israeli attack, the Houthis are targeting with missiles and drones Israeli or associated cargo ships in the Red Seaand the Arabian Sea, as well as Tel Aviv and a number of Israeli areas and ports.
