Afrasianet - Washington has handed over to the Syrian mission to the United Nations a memorandum changing its legal status from a permanent mission of a member state to the United Nations to a "mission of a government not recognized by the United States."

The memorandum also included the cancellation of visas granted to members of the mission from the  G1  category intended for diplomats accredited to the United Nations and recognized by their governments in the host country, to the G3 category, which is granted to foreign nationals who qualify for a visa, without the United States recognizing their governments.

A source close to the US State Department, contacted by the newspaper "An-Nahar", refused to comment on the subject because he is not authorized to authorize the media, noting that he does not confirm or deny the issuance of this decision.

She added that the memorandum, accompanied by an unofficial translation, prepared by the permanent delegation, that "the decision to grant the new visas is up to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), after taking a number of steps and procedures aimed at changing the legal status of the delegation and its members, as indicated in the memorandum."

In the last paragraph of the cable obtained by An-Nahar, the delegation noted the following: "The memorandum includes an explicit and direct declaration that the United States of America does not recognize the current Syrian transitional government, and may be followed by similar steps in terms of non-recognition by other countries that share some of the concerns of the US administration."
