Josep Borrell: There is no joint European decision on stopping arms sales to Israel
Afrasianet - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has warned the world of a "great conflagration, having lost its humanity and ignoring conflicts in the Middle East".
"The world is on the brink of a big conflagration, and as long as the war continues in Gaza and Lebanon, we will remain on the brink of a spark that ignites an even bigger fire," Borrell said.
Borrell's statement to Spanish radio RNE came in response to Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip for more than a year, and its aggression against Lebanon since September 23.
The European official pointed out that the United Nations confirms that the Gaza Strip is witnessing the most violent and serious humanitarian crisis the world has witnessed since World War II. "What is happening in the Middle East shows that we have lost our humanity," Borrell said.
Regarding arms exports to Israel, he said: "There is no joint decision in the European Union to stop arms sales to Israel. He stressed that each country in the Union has its own decision regarding arms sales to Israel.
"Every country decides what's right for it, and I can't stop anyone from doing something, or recommending doing something else. Spain, Italy and France have suspended arms sales to Israel, unlike other countries such as Germany that are boosting military aid to Israel, so there is no common position."
