Homicides and robberies rise in the U.S. compared to last year

The Washington Police Department recently revealed that the crime rate in the US capital has risen compared to last year, with homicides and robberies specifically increasing.

According to statistics released by it, homicides have risen by 28% since the beginning of the year, from 126 in 2022 to 161 in 2023.

Moreover, sexual assaults rose by 19 percent and assaults with a dangerous weapon by 4 percent, according to the Washington Police Department.

Overall, violent crime in Washington has risen 37 percent year-to-date, from 2,350 in 2022 to 3,216 so far this year, according to the department.

Crimes related to property disputes in Washington, D.C., have risen 29 percent since this time last year, from 13,443 to 17,331.

The number of car thefts has also doubled, and the rate of arson of property has increased by 300%, from two to eight.

The Metropolitan Police Department added that combined crime in Washington rose 30 percent, from 15,793 to 20,547.

The Washington Police Department said in its report that its latest statistics are based on definitions of the D.C. Offenses Act.
