Afrasianet - Donald Trump's return to the White House has alarmed America's wealthy elite as a growing number of American millionaires have begun to seek a safe haven away from the expected political volatility.

Historic Scottish castles have become a favourite destination for those fleeing the "American cloak", leading to an unprecedented rise in prices to record levels.

According to real estate reports, Scotland has recently seen an unprecedented wave of buying by wealthy Americans, to the point of bidding wars between them.

In one recent deal, three Americans bid far beyond the initial price of a castle for sale. Cameron Eure, head of residential real estate at real estate agency Savills, said U.S. interest had pushed castle prices to unprecedented levels.

"After the last Trump election, we saw a real surge in Americans' inquiries on our website. Not everyone is his supporter, and many are looking for alternatives outside the United States. This trend was confirmed by statements to CNN that there has been a "wave of immigration" among wealthy Americans since the beginning of the Trump era, with one immigrant declaring: "We are fleeing the chaos ... The America we knew is disappearing fast."

Official figures show reinforcement of this phenomenon, with more than 1,900 Americans applying for British citizenship in the first quarter of 2025 alone, the highest number since registration began in 2004. Beyond political factors, experts say Scottish castles have a special appeal, with their historical charm combining authenticity and luxury.

"Scottish castles are not just real estate, but pieces of art that tell centuries of history. Its quality and value are incomparable compared to others in Europe." This interest was manifested in the rapid sale of multimillion-pound castles, such as Glenboroddale, which sold for more than 200,000 pounds above its asking price.

The castles on display range from medieval castles with their original fortifications to modern palaces with historical touches. Irshall Castle in Fife, visited by Queen Mary of the Scots, preserves sixteenth-century rifle openings, while the Berwindi Tower, despite its historic appearance, is actually a modern building dating back to 1998.

Castles are not limited to luxury housing, some have been turned into hotels or wedding venues, while hundreds have remained private residences passed down between generations. The global popularity of the TV series "Traitors", filmed in Ardros Castle, has contributed to an increase in global interest in these architectural masterpieces.

"Castles aren't for everyone. Its buyers need enormous financial resources that cover not only the purchase, but also the ongoing maintenance. But when they find the castle that captures their hearts, they don't stop at any price." This mentality is evident in the statements of American actress Christina Hendricks, who expressed her desire to own a Scottish castle after being fascinated by it during filming, saying: "The history here is breathtaking."
