Afrasianet - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow welcomes U.S. President Donald Trump's comments about his desire for peace in Ukraine.
This came according to what Peskov told reporters in his press briefing on Tuesday, where he continued commenting on the US president's statement that he had given Russia "nothing but misery": "We heard President Trump's statement about his desire to bring peace to Ukraine. We can only welcome that. We receive certain information about the expected actions in this direction. We welcome them too, but we continue to monitor how the reality on the ground evolves."
Peskov noted that Ukraine still receives the bulk of its military aid from the United States and through American channels.
Peskov also stressed that Moscow had not yet heard official statements about the possibility of partial lifting of U.S. sanctions.
Reuters reported earlier that U.S. authorities were considering the possibility of partially lifting sanctions on Russia as part of broader diplomatic efforts to improve U.S.-Russian relations and find ways to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
On whether actual consultations are underway between representatives of Russia and the United States on sanctions and the Kremlin's assessment of the possibility of easing them, Peskov said: "It is probably too early to talk about anything. We have not heard any official statements, but, in any case, our position on sanctions is well known, as we consider them illegal."
Peskov stressed that Russian-American negotiations on Ukraine are unlikely to begin until after the diplomatic missions between the two countries fully resume their work.
At a Russian-American meeting in Istanbul on February 27, devoted to the problems of the work of the embassies in Moscow and Washington, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the two sides raised issues related to Russian diplomatic property in the United States in the context of the return of six real estate properties "illegally seized in the period 2016-2018" to Russia.
