Afrasianet - Venezuela has called on the UN Security Council to protect it from US sanctions, calling Washington's actions against it "economic terrorism."
Venezuela's permanent representative to the United Nations, Samuel Moncada, told a news conference on Tuesday that US sanctions were "illegal measures against a UN member state, and this obliges the international community to condemn them."
Moncada called on the Security Council to intervene and "take action under the Charter of the United Nations," calling on the Secretary-General of the Organization to "condemn directly the unilateral steps against Venezuela."
Venezuela had sent letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Security Council in that regard.
For its part, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry accused Washington of "economic terrorism against the Venezuelan people," saying that the United States "betting on the failure of political dialogue" between the authority and the Venezuelan opposition.
This came in response to the US administration's decision to freeze all assets of the Venezuelan government in the United States, including the Central Bank and the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA.
