Afrasianet - Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, in an exclusive interview with Al Arabiya’s General Manager Turki al-Dakhil, has rejected accusations by Iraqi parties and politicians about postponing the parliamentary elections and pointed out that he is “committed to the constitution”.
Abbadi said during the interview that the recent differences between the Dawa Party was because of the Nouri al-Maliki’s refusal of Abadi running for elections on the party’s list, resulting with the party being left of the list of those participating in the upcoming vote.
More recently, a dispute broke out after an election law passed by Iraq’s House of Representatives, specifically in regards to an eligible candidate’s requirement in obtaining a university degree. However, the decision of the Iraqi parliament revealed the possibility of challenging the law, stressing that the constitutional text did not specify the quality of academic achievement members had to hold.
In response to this decision, Member of Parliament Jasim Mohammed Jaafar pointed to the presence of at least 100 parliamentarians who did not hold a university degree.
For his part, spokesperson Saad al-Hadithi reiterated the government's commitment to all its duties toward ensuring the holding of parliamentary elections on time.
