Afrasianet - Britain's Financial Times has highlighted the West's silence on what is happening in Gaza, calling it a "shameful silence", saying the West should be ashamed and stop enabling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to act with impunity.

The  United States and Europe, as Israel's closest allies, have not done enough to pressure Netanyahu's government to de-escalate.

After nearly 19 months of conflict that has left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and sparked accusations of war crimes, Netanyahu is preparing for a new offensive that could end with a full occupation of Gaza and pushing its population into permanently besieged areas.

The current Israeli plan will gradually empty Gaza of its population through displacement, incessant bombardment and destruction of infrastructure, adding to the tragedy of the territory's 2.2 million residents.

Accelerating deterioration of the humanitarian situation

The humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating, humanitarian aid is being denied entry, child malnutrition rates are on the rise, and hospitals are suffering from severe shortages of medicines, amid warnings of impending famine.

Despite this, the Financial Times asserts that the West, especially the United States, has shown only timid reactions, and even US President Donald Trump has taken no serious steps except for brief statements referring to hunger in Gaza, without preventing Netanyahu from moving forward with his campaign.

The newspaper also holds Trump additional responsibility for the continuation of the war, noting that his upcoming visit to the Gulf will see attempts to hold the Islamist group Hamas fully responsible, at a time when Arab leaders must pressure him to rein in Netanyahu.

In conclusion, the Financial Times warns that continued international complicity, either through silence or fear of confronting Israel, only deepens the humanitarian catastrophe, calling for real action to stop the war, lift the blockade and resume negotiations.
