Afrasianet - According to a report published by the Italian newspaper "Il Manifesto", statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a number of his ministers that they are ready to protect the Druze, talk about the possibility of granting them work permits in Israel, and distributing humanitarian aid in Sweida are all efforts that fall within a strategy based on dividing the region sectarianly in order to facilitate its control.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar expressed in the clearest possible way the Netanyahu government's vision of how to achieve Israel's strategic goal and ensure its continued superiority in the Middle East, when he said of the news of the distribution of Israeli humanitarian aid to the Druze in southern Syria, "In a region where we will always be a minority, it is right and necessary to support other minorities."

French style

During the colonial era, France pursued a policy similar to that currently pursued by Israel, seeking to stoke sectarian divisions in Syria and Lebanon to keep these countries weak and internally fragmented across ethnic fault lines that continue to date.

Potential ally

In light of the sectarian crises that Arab countries have been suffering from for decades, several external parties have presented themselves as protectors of this or that sect, with the aim of expanding influence and exploiting resources.

In this context, the Israeli government insists on presenting itself as a protector of the Syrian Druze, whose presence is concentrated in the southwestern Suwayda region, a few dozen kilometers from the Israeli-occupied  Syrian Golan.

The Israeli army took advantage of the vacuum left by the fall  of Bashar al-Assad's regime  last December, seizing control of Mount Hermon, which overlooks Damascus, and expanded its presence to the Yarmouk River, a tributary of the Sea of Galilee.

Israel views the Druze of Suwayda as a potential ally that could enable it to consolidate its influence east of the Golan, in areas that were present by Iran andLebanese Hezbollah until 3 months ago.

Israeli efforts

While Israel pursues a scorched-earth policy and forced displacement in places like Gaza, in other areas such as southern Syria it pursues a policy that is less violent and more flexible.

In this area, there are no air and artillery attacks to destroy infrastructure and expel the population, and some areas are carefully occupied.

Several Syrian eyewitnesses confirmed that senior Israeli officers communicate with elites in the villages of Quneitra and Wadi Yarmouk and speak fluent Arabic, with Israel selecting Druze officers from the Galilee and others from Damascus and Aleppo to negotiate in a friendly atmosphere with the local population.

Trombetta said there were still no signs of any opening to Israel in Quneitra cities and towns.
